This guide untangles the alphabet soup so you can plan certification from day one instead of discovering a gap at customs.

Two kinds of certification

Transport safety requirements determine whether lithium cells and batteries meet the applicable conditions for transport. Product-safety and market-access requirements depend on the battery type, application, destination market and applicable regulations or standards. These are separate compliance workstreams and should be evaluated independently.

Transport: UN38.3 (non-negotiable)

UN38.3 is part of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria and establishes transport testing requirements for lithium cells and batteries. Lithium cells and batteries offered for transport generally must meet the applicable UN38.3 testing requirements, subject to the relevant transport regulations and any applicable exceptions.

The UN38.3 test series includes T.1 Altitude Simulation, T.2 Thermal Test, T.3 Vibration, T.4 Shock, T.5 External Short Circuit, T.6 Impact / Crush, T.7 Overcharge and T.8 Forced Discharge. The applicability of individual tests depends on whether the item is a cell or battery and the relevant test conditions.
